STRATEGY FOR NEW MUSICALS

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh dominate the world of the Musical Theatre.
Lloyd Webber also dominates ownership of some of London's major theatres such as The London Palladium and Drury Lane Theatre.
In 2013 it is estimated that more than 8.5 million people will have seen West End musicals with a turnover of some £350 millions. So, Musical Theatre is big money - and big losses in some cases.

If you are a budding composer and creator of musical theatre you need to be realistic in your Strategy if you want to break into this highly competitive market. So, what is my advice ?
Firstly, understand that you need a large amount of funding - risk capital - even if you have a brilliant musical score and a great script. This first step will be very difficult. The dominant players will attract capital due to their reputation and contacts. It is doubtful if you an unknown will be able to do so !
Musicals are normally collaborative productions. You will find it difficult to attract collaborators or partners - so do not waste you time and effort trying to do so. I have found that we live in a Noreply Society - if you do try to contact prospects, they will almost certainly ignore you.
Success makes them aloof, selfish and unavailable - unless you are in their magic circle of like Prima Donas !

So, you must be realistic and modest in your expectations. What should you do then ?

STRATEGY FOR NEW MUSICALS

  • Your musical must be tailored to a low cost flexible production such as - use effective lighting to maximize the appearance of sets. Do not suggest high cost stage scenery. Use lighting changes on simple sets
  • Keep cast numbers within about 12 people to reduce artists costs with some multi roles for each member of the cast except the principal players.
  • It goes without saying that your musical score and script must be original and very creative for a 2 hours long musical with a 20 minutes interval
  • Make sure that the choreography is lively and appealing.
  • Make sure that the cast wardrobes are colourful and low cost productions.
  • Use recordings for your musical numbers - ie the themes and do not use costly musicians except where there is an amateur production.

KEY OBJECTIVES

In Stage 1 ignore any attempt to launch your musical onto the London Stage or any international musical theatre stages. You will fail !

Realise that the Market for Musical Theatre is in general as follows -

  • Capital Theatres such as London and New York
  • Major Provincial Cities Theatres and Groups.
  • Minor Cities and Towns Theatres
  • Suburban small theatres stages
  • NODA - National Operatic and Dramatic Association Theatre Groups
  • Amateur Theatres Production Groups
  • Schools and Collages Theatre Groups
  • Stage School Productions
  • Online Internet Exposure and Downloads.
Your best option is to promote your new musical vis the NODA Members list and the Amateur Theatre Groups. If you succeed, you will gain considerable valuable experience at low financial risk. You can then tackle some of the other Market Segments as listed above.
At present there is a tendency fro productions to be The Golden Oldies - such as South Pacific, The King and I,  42nd Street, West Side Story and so on.

I believe that it is time to see on stage some new refreshing 21st Century Musicals. In order to create and encourage new talent in Britain for the benefit of the Arts in general, I also believe that it is good to break the dominance of the Big Two Composers.

PROMOTING THE NEW MUSICAL

If you have a low budget, I suggest that you concentrate your efforts on the main segments which I have listed as Stage 1 Priorities. You can use Direct Mail on a selective basis as well as the Internet - place a Video and Music on YouTube. Also invest in  iTunes - Google Play - Virgin - Spotify and other Social Media sites. See my article The Online Digital Music Revolution 2013 for further helpful, hints.
If you are lucky, find a Champion who is impressed with your work and who will open doors for you in the Musical Theatre World.

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU.

BUSINESS VISION - DIGITAL MUSIC CONVERGENCE AS A PRODUCT MARKETING TOOL

One business trend that is certain to continue to develop well into the 21st century is the increasing usage of the Internet and its impact on digital devices and on Marketing Strategies.

One of the key areas for more development is my view that the Music Industry will have to adapt to these changes at a more rapid rate than as at 2013.
The scope for the growth of Digital Online Music will remain very attractive but it will become less attractive in the decade ahead as a profit earner for the composer / artists / labels as consumers throughout the world and in particular the emerging markets will force price levels down or will refuse to pay anything for digital music downloads.

Therefore, the future lies with what I term - Convergent  Linked Product Marketing - CLPM.
Digital Music Sites will become vehicles for Joint Marketing Strategies.
Music downloads and internet sites will be free on demand linked to the Product offerings of various companies with enormous scope to reach customers Globally - with the emphasis on emerging markets in India, South East Asia, Latin America and Australia.
In return, it will be Advertising Revenue and Merchandising which will be the lifeblood of the music composer, artist, label in the future.

This trend to using music as a marketing tool is still in its infancy. Google, facebook and YouTube are good examples of how they are trying to create revenue from digital online producers - but mainly for their benefit and little real value for the composer, artists and labels.
One online music offering had 800 millions hits and earned £13,000.

So, it is important that in future composers, artists and and  labels improve their marketing skills and that they are proactive in their search for marketing partners.
I recommend that they attend one of the highly informative Music Industry Seminars run by Helen Gammons Programme Director, Henley Business School, Greenland, Henley-on-Thames
I am sure that the investment will be worthwhile.

All the Times 1000 companies should send delegates to these seminars and in the Workshop Sessions learn how to develop the know how and skills to use Music Linkage for Product Placement and Global Market Penetration.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2014 - UK ENTRY

For the past few years the United Kingdom has failed miserably to perform well at the Eurovision Song Contest Finals.
The UK has finished at the bottom end of the table in spite of some brilliant renderings from the performing artists. . It is tempting to blame the selection panel for choosing such losing songs.

I think that it time to make a drastic change in approach. Instead of selecting loud, bouncy, boom boom numbers - because this is what Eurovision wants - we should remember that Ireland won Eurovision many times with  Ballads. Yes, it is time for a Ballad - melodic, romantic, wonderful to listen to over and over again.
A potential Number 1 Chart Hit - and Winner of Eurovision 2014.

I have that song. I composed the music and wrote the lyrics. The song is called EVERYTIME.
The musical arrangement was made by Richard Niles in his Los Angeles studio in 2013.
Richard Niles has had 40 world hits for artists such as -
Kylie Minogue
Tina Turner
Grace Jones
Mariah C\arey
Cher
Per Shop Boys
Paul McCartnet
and many more.

Richard Niles said - Your song is lovely and we have made it beautiful

Helen Gammons, Programme Director of the MBA Degree Course for The Music &; Creative Industries said - Everytime is a wonderful song.

Eurovision Song Contest 2014 - GO FOR IT - EVERYTIME.

THE NOREPLY CULTURE IN THE 21ST CENTURY - THE UNREACHABLES

THE UNREACHABLES

Do you remember the days when you would receive a polite acknowledgement of your letter from Companies and Public Bodies ? I do.
When I was Chief Executive in leading British and French Companies, I would always acknowledge letters because I thought that it was the polite and right thing to do. Of course this was in the days of the Secretary before the Computer Revolution when you can write the letters yourself !
However, there is no excuse for ignorant impolite lack of manners attitudes from today's NOREPLY CULTURE
This dismissive behavior in all quarters of our society should be held in the contempt that they deserve.
If you are a budding musician, singer or composer and you write to any of the leading music Publishers. the chances are that they will ignore your letter - and bin your Demo CD.
If you send a web email to a Celebrity, guess what - you will not get a reply.
Do not count on getting a reply from a Government Agency - you may be lucky and get a reply in 6 months.

Perhaps you can try one of the automated telephone services.  Often a voice will say - we are very busy at the moment, try later - and cut you off. HM Inland Revenue are top of the league for doing this - but BT are not far behind in their disrespect for you the customer.

Do you ever try to write a book ? You spend many weeks writing and then send it  to either a Literary
Agent or direct to a Publisher. Do not hold your breath - the chances are they will not reply or you will get the usual brush off - we have too many books on our list at present. This means - they cannot be bothered to even read your book.
Perhaps you have written an interesting article about key issues in current affairs ? You may send it to a magazine or a newspaper. You expect a reply ? Forget it. Most never reply and they treat you with contempt.

Have you ever been Job Hunting ? If you have ever written  a  speculative letter with CV to companies the chances are that about 90% of the companies will ignore you and will not be bothered to reply. If you write to be a candidate for a specific advertised job, you will find that if you do not get a reply within 2 weeks, in 90% of the cases you will get no reply at all.  Good manners and politeness seem to have been abandoned by the Noreply Culture of today's world.

Yes - we live in the NOREPLY Society where Noreply is the norm.

Is it not time for our Society to be more polite and give talent more of a chance and not just concentrate on the so called Celebrities ? Surely, a polite response - and after careful evaluation - can be given to the person who has taken the trouble to write to them in the first place with a proposition ?
Bring back good manners and inter personal skills I say.

HIGH SPEED RAIL PROJECT - HS2 - ANOTHER WHITE ELEPHANT

The proposed High Speed Rail link between London and Birmingham in phase 1 at an estimated cost of over £50,000,000,000 - yes - 50 Billion Pounds and rising is the biggest White Elephant since the Labour Government Ground Nuts Scheme in Nigeria many years ago. The HS2 scheme is a complete waste of Public Money. Remember how the London Olympic Games was budgeted at £2.5 Billions and ended up £9 Billions ?  Do you remember how everyone in the Establishment proudly boasted - We kept the Games within budget ! How can we trust the Civil Service with their phony Budgets ? How many large scale budgets have they got wrong ? Many I fear.  Have they allowed for inflation?  Has the Treasury made a NPV - Net Present Value Financial Analysis ? Have they taken into consideration advances in Travel Technology and its impact on costings ? Have they balanced large city economic and employment needs versus smaller towns economic need in the UK ?  Has the Government invited a leading Business School - such as Henley Business School - to make an independent evaluation of the cost benefits of HS2 and alternative priority options for an investment of some £50 Billions in the UK economy ?

To save about 20 minutes on the journey between Birmingham and London will make no difference to the business  traveller because any saving on the railway will be lost once they reach London. The London traffic is getting worse rather than better in spite of the Congestion Charge. In any case most business travellers like to work, read  or sleep on the train. The time gained argument is very weak indeed.
As a result, the argument that HS2 will increase business between London and Birmingham is false. It will make no difference at all.

The supporters will argue that there is a Capacity Problem developing now and in the future decades.
This may be true but capacity can be increased in many ways.

  • Technological advances in Communications will mean that it will be not be needed to make long distance journeys for the business traveller.Video communications are already commonplace and the slimline TV technology and SpaceSat Communications will accelerate non travel communications in the future. Capacity can also be increased by -
  • Introducing Double Decker carriages like in the USA, Japan, Holland and other countries.
  • Adding extra carriages to existing trains
  • Revising timetables to increase the frequency of travel between Birmingham and London.
  • Considering the cost alternative of Monorail Links over existing rail tracks
  • Expand luxury fast Executive coach travel between the two cities
  • Increasing frequency of rail travel on alternative routes via High Wycombe to Birmingham.
There is also a Regional Expansion consideration. It may be better to invest more in the infrastructure of smaller cities and towns to promote employment and prosperity. The new towns such as Milton Keynes have proven that investment in the outer regions can bring sound economic benefits. These suburban towns have already good communications links with London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds ,Glasgow for example. Why not develop these rail and road links ? Why not improve local communications ? This could bring more economic benefits than a faster rail link between London and Birmingham. Why not have a mini-reversal of the Beecham Plan ? Local conurbations need better rail and road travel ! Surburban links to London need more investment - note the overcrowding on existing routes.

Consequently, the business case and capacity arguments fail in my view. There are more pressing options -  £50 Billion could build and equip many new hospitals and increase the capacity of the NHS - a more key issue and of more benefit to Society as a whole. School repairs and additional school places capacity is another more deserving priority. Also - what about a £50 Billions spend for Care for the Elderly?
Surely, investment in these areas would bring long lasting economic and social benefits to the United Kingdom.
Readers will have noted that I have not used the arguments that HS2 will do damage to the Environment, Property and Peoples lives. However - if there is need of any further proof that HS2 is a White Elephant .
I support the arguments that HS2 will have a devastating impact on the people who live along the proposed route. It will also have a negative impact on the environment.

Finally, everyone will agree that one of the key drivers of Growth in the Economy is the Speedy economical movement of goods and freight. The UK needs investment in the infrastructure to improve freight movement for the Domestic Market and the International Markets. The HS2 Project does nothing to improve Fright movement cost effectiveness.

I am amazed that so many Civil Servants and Politicians can be so stupid to support this HS2 folly.
I am an ordinary citizen. I do not live along the HS2 route. I just feel strongly that we ordinary citizens must make our voices known - and help to stop the madness of HS2 before it is too late.

MUSIC COMPOSITION AS A HOBBY

MUSIC COMPOSITION AS A HOBBY

Since the age of 16. I have always been interested in trying to compose music. In my early days, I composed a musical which I called Maytime. I sent one of my songs Everywhere that you are to the famous band leader Geraldo. He replied thanking me but said the song was not quite up to professional standard. I suppose that this reply inspired me not to give up and to try again.
In my retirement years, as a hobby, I have become more professional. In 2013, due to a personal contact which I had at Henley Business School. I had an introduction to Richard Niles in Los Angeles who is one one of the World's most famous music arrangers. You have probably never heard of him !
Richard Niles has had 40 World Hits arranging these hits for Kylie Minogue ( the song Locomotion from her recent Show Girl Tour ) , Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Paul McCartney, Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones and many more. He has a studio in Hollywood Los Angeles California.
I contacted Richard Niles and for a fee, he did a modern arrangement of my ballad Everytime.
He said that The song is lovely and I think the arrangement is beautiful. I am very pleased with the outcome.
In 2013, I have also composed a classical Concerto – The Wild Flowers Concerto – A Tribute to the Wild Flowers of London Olympic Park. Our 50 Plus Club John Finnemore made the video and with his help – which I appreciate very much – I placed the Concerto on YouTube, So far this year 21,200 people have viewed the Video sample – 3 minutes. The full Concerto is 9 minutes 30 seconds and can be downloaded online from iTunes, Amazon, Virgin Megastores, Google Play, Spotify.
In order to help fellow budding composers, I have written a 17 pages article – The Online Music Revolution 2013. It can be viewed on my Blog – www.eurekys.blogspot.co.uk Scroll down to the article.
My song Cry Over You has been played 7,200 times on Global Radio stations in 2013. It won an Honour Award in the Great American Song Contest – coming Number 6 out of 660 entrants.
My Musical Ria Conchita contains 13 songs. It was a Semi- Finalist in the British New Musical Awards.. The National Operatic and Dramatic Association gave the Musical a full page write up in their National Magazine.
Am I making loads of money from my musical hobby ? No. Breaking into the Music Industry is like breaking into Fort Knox Gold Cellars ! If you are already famous, it can be easy. If you win X Factor on Television or you are runner-up like The One Direction Boy Band, it is easy to launch new songs.
Most of the time, a Record Producer will not even reply to your submission.
However, is money the only measurement of success in life ? I think not.
I gain a lot of pleasure from my compositions and I hope to continue composing for the rest of my days.

THE ONLINE MUSIC REVOLUTION IN THE 21ST CENTURY

CHASING YOUR DREAMS IN THE TRADITIONAL MUSIC PUBLISHING INDUSTRY

It might help you considerably to succeed.

CHASING YOUR DREAM IN THE TRADITIONAL MUSIC PUBLISHING INDUSTRY

CHASING DREAMS IN THE TRADITIONAL MUSIC INDUSTRY

Probably the best advice that I can give to a budding talented.Composer of music - be their genre Classical or Pop is this -
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND EFFORT on trying to break into the Traditional Music Publishing Industry.

WHY ?

The traditional Music Publishing Industry is like trying to break into  Fort Knox Bullion  Gold storage in the USA  Impossible.
If you research the Music Publishers Association List of Members, you will note that 95% of the its Members state - Unsolicited songs not accepted. They will dump your Demo recordings into the nearest bin. They will not even provide you with a polite letter of rejection. They receive so many offers that they are now arrogant, impolite and oblivious to new talent and the hopes of so many people.
How do you get solicited ? Heaven knows ! Forget them. Do not waste your time on them. Perhaps one day, they will need new talent.

If you contact all the leading Music Publishers - I have done so in the UK and the USA - you will not get a reply. They cannot be bothered to consider new talent except from leading existing stars and winners of the X Factor ! So, I am afraid that you will banging your head against a brick wall.

You may decide to join BASCA - The British Academy of Songwriters and Composers. BASCA is very good at offering Workshops and advice and guidance. They are useful for informing the budding composer about Competitions and high profile functions and lots of help on contracts and legal matters. However, I have found BASCA not forthcoming with introductions to people who could consider or listen to your new compositions. So, do not count on BASCA to open doors for you..

Another route that is unlikely to bear fruit is to contact the Agents of leading artists in the Music Industry.
You will be wasting your time. They are like the R & B departments of the major Music Publishers - so inundated with talent, that they can be ruthless in their attitude of contempt to new talent.

Most of the leading artists today in 2013 have websites where you can post a message. They also use the social sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Google and others. I have found that I never get a reply from any of these routes. A waste of time.

You may decide that the best route to promote  your music is to send your CDs to all the major Radio Stations. Wrong.  You will enter the world of catch 22 - most will only play music which is available in music retailers - the traditional shops ( which are. in decline.)  Even if your music is available from all the online distribution sites such as - iTunes, Amazon, Virgin Megastores, Google Play, Spotify and others, they will not play your music. The online music sites are expanding at a rapid rate !

So, with all this doom and gloom, how can you succeed in the Music Industry ?
The answer is - Concentrate your resources on the Online Digital Music Distribution and Promotion sites.
Give the Traditional Routes a big miss.

For guidance on how to use Online Marketing Techniques, see my article -

THE ONLINE MUSIC REVOLUTION IN THE 21ST CENTURY.

THE UK AND THE EU - WHERE NEXT ? THE ACTIONS NEEDED 2013 - 2020 THE VOICE OF ONE BRITISH CITIZEN

In 1957 The Treaty of Rome was signed between France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and Italy - " The Six European Economic  Community " which lowered trade barriers and was designed to increase the prosperity of these founder countries.
The United Kingdom was left on the sidelines and for many years General de Gaulle vetoed all attempts by the UK to join the EEC.
The people of the UK recognised the benefits of the EEC and it was not until the 1970s that the citizens of the UK were given the opportunity to join the EEC. The majority of the people of the UK voted in favour of the EEC in a Referendum.
Since the 1970s there has been considerable debate about the direction the EEC was taking - now called the EU - The European Union and Britain's role within the EU.

Politicians, the Establishment and the people are divided on the question of where do we go next ?
David Cameron has promised a Referendum on the Question of whether Britain should stay in the EU or not.
There is so much dis- information and bias about this topic that most people cannot see the wood for the trees. As one ordinary British citizen, here are my views which I hope will help the debate.

It is not as simple as an In / Out vote. This is what Britain should do to clarify the choice -

WHAT BRITAIN WANTS TO DO WITHIN THE  EUROPEAN UNION

  • Communicate to the citizens of the EU that the people of Britain want to remain in an EEC relationship with the EU to the benefit of all countries mutual trade
  • Britain wishes to remain in NATO as an independent partner - no European army.
  • Britain wishes to enjoy holiday travel within the EU and participate fully in Cultural activities throughout Europe.
  • Britain wishes to maintain joint research and development projects across the  EU
  • Britain wishes to remain in a cross borders Police co-operation
  • Britain wants to co-operate with the EU on all Terrorists Tracking and Criminal activities
  • Britain wishes to promote a peaceful co-existence within the EU member countries and globally.

WHAT BRITAIN DOES NOT WANT TO DO WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION

  • Britain does not want to be a Member of the European Union Parliament, The European Commission and the European Court of Justice
  • Britain does not want to be bound to EU Immigration Laws.
  • Britain wants to withdraw from the European Human Right Laws.
  • Britain will be freed from any financial commitments to the EU Budgets.
  • Britain will not condone EU Financial Laws which are detrimental to the City of London.
  • Britain must withdraw from any share trading tax set by the EU Commission which would affect investments in Pension Funds.

THE NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH EUROPE

  • Britain will work to promote prosperity in Britain and the EU and help to prevent another Financial Crisis.
  • Britain will not join the Eurozone.
  • Britain will help to promote free trade with trading partners throughout the World and Britain will continue to participate in Global Institutions - World Monetary Institutions, Monetary Fund, United  Nations, G8 and so on.
  • EU citizens travelling to the UK must have Health Insurance to cover Healthcare costs whilst in the UK - no dependence on the UK Welfare system.
  • The British Parliament will remain the main Legislative elected body for the United Kingdom
  • All powers will be restored to the British Parliament who will decide what EU Laws are accetpable to the British People
  • A new Treaty of London will be drawn up to ratify the future relationship between Britain and The EU.
  • The Treaty of London must be approved by the British people in a Referendum.
  • Timetable - Start negotiations January 2014 - complete negotiations January 2016 - UK / EU Parliamentary approval July 2016 - Treaty of London January 2017 - UK Referendum -July 2017 Implementation of Treaty of London - January 2018.

COMMERCIAL SUICIDE

The recent - June 2013 - publication of the UK Trading statistics showed that trade with the EU had declined in 2012 whilst trade with the rest of the World had increased substantially. Trade in 2012 with the Rest of the World increased by 11% but trade with the EU fell by 1.5%.  This has prompted many Politicians and MPs  from the Conservative Party and Ukip hopefuls to cry out - We do not need the EU. We have the rest of the World. The UK must withdraw completely from the EU.
Such views are absurd and it shows how ignorant they are on how International Trade works.
For example -
  • British Companies will trade where they like in the Global Economy providing the principles of Free Trade are maintained.
  • The Government cannot dictate to Companies what their trading policy should be
  • The UK needs the EU and The World
  • The EU needs the UK and the Rest of the World.
  • Small medium sized companies cannot trade normally world wide without investment. They need the close markets of the EU to expand,
  • The World is a better place for Global free trade - we do not want a trade war with the EU - we all lose from that.
  • A complete withdrawal from the EU would be disastrous for the UK BUT  we can leave providing we have a new Trade Treaty as I have recommended.  Everyone gains from that.
So, Parliament - start talking FACTS now and INFORM the people of the UK and the people of the EU.
Start NOW - do not wait a few more years. If there is more delay until after the 2015 Election, I fear the consequences in the Political Arena - the continued  rise of UKip. the fall of the Conservatives, the decline of the Liberals at the polls - and Labour more dominant and wishy washy !
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

CONCLUSION

This new relationship with the European Union MUST be debated and agreed with the EU -  before a Referendum is voted on in the UK.
The voters must know what are we voting for?  The Prime Minister Rt Hon. David Cameron is right is suggesting that the people in Britain must know the ramifications of what they are voting  for or against. When they know what is on offer and is realistic in implementation, then they can vote - YES or NO to the proposal. The Conservative Party needs to spell out the Objectives of any reforms they want NOW. Show the people that they have listened to the people. This will increase their credibility with the Electorate and take the steam out of the UKip momentum. If this leads to an early election so be it - the Conservatives will have the initiative.

A premature Referendum without all the facts would be very dangerous.

Whatever the final result, Britain must maintain good relations with Europe. We do not want friction and wars - too many millions have died in the past in Europe due to nationalism and unhealthy rivalry.
The Media have a big role to play in presenting the truth and the facts of the choice facing the British people.
Bias and Sensationalism are the enemy of a a free society. So far, in 2013, this is what we the people are getting. All I want is accurate information, creative thinking on all sides of the argument so that the people can make the right choice for Britain AND Europe.
In the 21st Century, Britain must not become an isolationist nation but a free, Globally outlooking and prosperous and competitive nation - for all our families and future generations.

Britain is European but Britain wants to be ruled by its own elected Parliament and not by an elite of Civil  Servants and well connected rulers in Brussels or Strasburg.

THE ONLINE MUSIC REVOLUTION IN THE 21ST CENTURY

EUREKYS MUSIC

AnyTime - AnyWhere - AnyHow

ONE YEAR IN THE GLOBAL MUSIC INDUSTRY
Marketing Strategy for the Internet - Reflections of a new entrant Composer Songwriter

By  Ray Williams MA MPhil MBA DIPM

1 - ONLINE MARKET -  MUSIC GROWTH

It is a fact that sales of Online Music are increasing at a rate of 15% per annum whilst the sales of Cds through traditional outlets are in decline. Companies like HMV have gone into Administration with much job losses and other traditional outlets are  in decline also.
The major production companies like Sony // EMI and Warners are finding it difficult to compete with Online methods.

2 - THERE IS A MUSIC REVOLUTION going throughout the Global Music Industry.

In the past decades, it has been very diffclult for artists with talent to get their music heard. Too often. the traditional routes have been closed to them - most of the large companies would not
bother to acknowledge letters and they would often bin Cds without even opening the envelopes. Shame on them !

Some Music magazines only write about music which is available from music shops in Cd labelled and wrapped format. They fail to understand the Online Music Revolution - to their financial detriment.

For eample - sites like Reverbnation will help the artists to design an Album Label and include information about the work and the Profile of the Artists. Then, Reverbnation will deliver the Album to the online sites such as Amazon who will then supply it to buyers in Labelled format. No problem. The more progressive retailers - for their survival - have recognised the Revolution and they offer customers online purchases as well as on shop purchases. These retailers are realistic and they will survive. Also, many magazines are now starting to write about online artists - review their work and provide critical commentaries. Good on them ! They deserve to florish and to progress. They will attract many more readers with this policy.

There are other Online Music Distribution Companies - TuneCore, MonoTunes and SoundCloud being the main alternatives. I decided to use TuneCore and MonoTunes as alternative distribution channels as a basis of  performance comparison.

Other key digital music sites are - Blink Box Music owned by Tesco, Rhapsody, Last.com and The Academy of Electronic Music.

So, to those Ostrich outdated thinkers in the Global Magazine business I say - Give the online Artists the full recognition that they deserve. They should also check with their Legal Departments / Advisers to see if their policies are legal - do they infrnge Competition Laws of the European Union for example ie Restriction of Trade ?

Now in 2013 things are different. Downloads of music are much cheaper than if purchased from a music retailer, people can listen free of charge to sound bites or see a Video - and they can then go to online sites to buy.

Infographic: The Digital Music Revolution | Statista

The sales of Digital Online Music - singles and albums have continued to grow 2007 - 2014 and downloads have increased dramatically in the USA, Europe and other countries of the World. Artists now use Digital Music sites , including YouTube as a promotional  tool for their music. Live Concerts and Television appearances boost  Single and Alum sales. The use of an experienced Agent continues to be a major ingredient for success in the Music Industry.

3  -  THE IMPACT OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Music lovers all over the World can now in 2013 download music online onto their PC Computers, iPods, iPads / Tablets, Mobile Phones and via Smart Television screens within seconds. Music at home, Music on the move, Music anywhere at all times of the day. The Online Music Shop does not close !.

APPLE iTunes have played a major role in the development and growth of Digital Music.
The Company have stated that music lovers have downloaded and purchased over 25 Billion songs from its store.
An average of over 15,000 songs are downloaded every minute from the Apple online store.
The Market for Digital Music is estimated at over £1 Billion per annum and growing fast at about 15% - 18% per annum on a Global basis.

4 - THE WILD FLOWERS CONCERTO

I have composed under my Label - EUREKYS MUSIC - more than 15 Pop songs and recently in December 2012 I composed a beautiful new Concerto

THE WILD FLOWERS CONCERTO - A Tribute to the Wild Flowers of London Olympic Park.

EUREKYS is my Company name. I invented the word to look like and sound like an IT Company.
Eurekys is a Registered Trade name - costs about £450 to do this and it is well worth it. You will protect your Company, your Website, your Reputation and your Goodwill.

I invented the Strapline -

AnyTime - AnyWhere - AnyHow.

This reinforces the Corporate Message - it describes  exactly what Digital Online Music is about. -
Accessibility at Your Convenience.

So far, I have great success in the first 4 weeks of 2013  This is a First Stage of the Product Life Cycle. - a Test Marketing  Project   I am keeping all the Strategic Options and I am maintaining a Flexible  approach to the Market. If the Strategy does not work - Change it !  So, what have I done so far ?

5 - DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW GLOBAL PRODUCT

It all began when I visited the London Olympic Games during July and August 2012. I was very impressed by the millions of Wild Flowers which were planted throughout the Park. Multi-coloured flowers of sheer beauty. A wondrous site in the Park - and indeed throughout the British Countryside - and in other countries of the World.

This INSPIRATION created an IDEA. The Idea was to compose a Concerto in their honour and to use the photos which I took of the Wild Flowers as a cover for my Album.
I decided to engage one of Britain's Top Recording Studios - APPLETREE STUDIOS near Thame in Buckinghamshire. The studio had been established for more than 25 years. They had state of the art recording equipment - including a MIXING UNIT which cost 50,000 pounds. It was a wise investment because it could create a very professional sound. I was going for QUALITY in the very discerning Classical Music Market. A very critical audience. If I was going to compete with the Masters like Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mozart, Rachmaninov  - I MUST have a quality Product.
I engaged Appletree Studios for 4 days. I hired a top Violinist Ed Hewitt to play the Solo Violin Parts.
It was all worth the investment. I had a quality Cd - which was branded EUREKYS. I registered EUREKYS a Trade Mark. The Cd was EMBEDDED with a code for Copyright purposes - every time it was to be played , I would get a ROYALTY payment.

6 - VIDEO GRAPHICS

I engaged PENN COMPUTING SERVICES  to create a short 3 minutes Video - based on original photos which I had taken at the London Olympic Park and Stadium in 2012.This was uploaded onto YOUTUBE - with such excellent results and feedback from viewers.
Penn Computing did a great job at a reasonable cost. They also created the Brand Image and Logo, based on the Wild Flowers and an Album Cover for Ria Conchita The Musical. I am indebted to John Finnemore the Managing Director and I recommend them without reservation for IT Consultancy.

7 - ESTABLISHMENT OF CREDIBILITY

I realised that my company EUREKYS MUSIC and my brand EUREKYS - together with my LOGO - A photo of The Wild Flowers - needed ro establish CREDIBILITY in the Global Market.
I decided to approach HRH Prince William and HRH The Duchess of Cambridge to offer them some revenue from the sales of the Concerto - towards their Charities. I had a lovely letter from them - they did not want to compromise their positions by showing me favouritism - and sent me their very warmest best wishes. At least I tried !

8 - THE WILD SEEDS PRODUCER

The Company who inspired me so much to compose this beautiful Concerto is -

PICTORIAL MEADOWS - GREEN ESTATE based in Sheffield England.

WEBSITE - http://www.pictorialmeadows.co.uk/seeds-service
email - info@greenestate.org

They have a very impressive website - and I can strongly recommend them for their range of seeds and service.

The Designer of OLYMPIC PARK MEADOWS in 2012 was Professor Nigel Dunnett.
The story of the Development of Olympic Park Meadows is shown on the Pictorial Meadows website. It is very impressive. There is a range of floral pictures taken in the Olympic Park.
After seeing these pictures of the Wild Flowers , I feel priviledged to have seen them close up when my wife and I visited the Olympic Games and ParaOlympics in 2012.
I am so proud that these Wild Flowers - from the seeds of Pictorial Meadows - inspired me so much to compose a Concerto - the first Classical work of my life.

From little seeds, great Concertos are born !

The Link to my Concerto Preview on YouTube is now clearly displayed on Page 1 of the Pictorial Meadows Website and on the other page entitled SEEDS, A very good example of Joint Marketing.

9 - PR IN THE PRESS

  • On a Promo Tour of Australia in January 2013 I have appeared on Channel 7 News Nationwide from Brisbane.
  • I have given Newspaper interviews
Contacted the following Symphony Orchestras  -
  • Queensland Symphony Orchestra

  • Australian Concert Orchestra
  • Amsterdam Concerto Orchestra
  • Thames Philharmonia Orchestra
  • Berliner Philharmonic Orchestra
I have invited them all to perform The Wild Flowers Concerto.and perhaps to include it in their next Album.

In addition, I have contacted 2 of the World'd most popular Award Winning Violinists to invite them to perform The Wild Flowers Concerto. They are -

  • NICOLA BERNEDITTI - Winner - Best Female Artist at the Classic Brit Awards 2012.
  • NIKI VASILAKIS - Young South Australian of The year 2012

10 - SPONSORSHIP

Eurekys Music has sponsored The Prize for Operatic Singing at the National Eisteddford of Wales in Denbigh North Wales August 2013.

Eurekys Music has also sponsored an Advertisement in The Redcliffe Herald Queensland Australia for their Souvenir Edition reporting on the unveiling of a Memorial to the BEE GEES who started their career in Redcliffe. TV, Radio and the Press will be there on the 14 February 2013, including the Bee Gees Family and the sole surviving Bee Gee - Barry Gibb.
I thought that it would be a good time to advertise on such an occasion of World wide interest.

  • I have written to the Top 6 Classical Magazines in the World.
  • I intend to send this article to a wider Preess Audience as well as Radio Stations.

I do not claim to have done everything perfectly but at least I am trying. Here is my Online Marketing Plan - in the hope that it will help my fellow artists. I have the greatest respect for Men and Women of talent - I respect their talent, dedication, courage and determination.

11 - ONLINE MARKETING PLAN 2013

  • I signed up with the Distribution Company REVERBNATION. If you click on their site www.reverbnation.com  you will find lots of helpful information -

  • How to create an APP for mobile phones.
  • How to get your music heard on iTunes, Google Play, Virgin Mega, Amazon, Spotify and many more online sites.
  • How to develop a Fan Club.
  • The cost is reasonabnle - about 34 USD per annum for Reverbnation to distribute your music to the online site world wide.

  • Next - upload your music onto YouTube. Try and make a simple Video to help promote your music. In 6 weeks my Concerto has achieved over 20,000 viewers from all over the World and the number is rising by 400 Listeners per day..

  • In order to promote your music on YouTube - search for GOOGLE ADWORDS and GOOGLE ADS VIDEO.
This will cost you on average about 75 USD for a 2 weeks campaign. I have found this to be most helpful and I recommend it to you.
Google Adwords will help you to get more clicks online and route people to your YouTube music, Website or Blog.  This is a MUST if you want to get high viewer results.
In the first 3 months of my Campaign Google Adwords have reported that more than 84,000 people have clicked one of my Adwords and seen my Advertisement, Video or Blog.

  • Facebook is another method - subscribe to a Facebook campaign at about 75USD and you will get lots of new Fans.

  • JANGO RADIO is another part of the Marketing Campaign. I choose one of my songs -
CRY OVER YOU - as a PROMO SONG. Jango Radio is World Wide and my song has been played 7200 times over the last 4 weeks - January 2013.  Jango Radio will also feature all your other music Albums and Singles.
The Top 10 sources of Listeners for my song  in order of numbers of Listeners are  -

  • USA
  • Japan
  • United Kingdom
  • Chile
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • Mexico
  • Spain
  • Phillipines
  • Israel
So far, April 2013, CRY OVER YOU has now been broadcast more than 7,000 times to 64 counties.

FANS - It is useful to review Fans per Play Ratios .At present they are -

  • Venezuela - 50%
  • Germany - 25%
  • Israel 13%
  • Spain 10%
  • Mexico - 8%

Blue Columns = Males
Pink Columns = Females

These early ratios are interesting because my song Cry Over You has a very Spanish guitar feel about the melody.. So, this may explain why it appeals to Spanish speaking countries like Venezuela. Spain and Mexico.

It surprises me that there are so few Listeners from European Countries. I expected a high number from the USA. I will closely monitor these trends over the next few months.

Listener Profiles as at December 2013 are as follows -

Age Group 23 - 34 is the key group with  Female audience the most dominant sector.

http://www.radioairplay.com/bands/234686/airplay_graphs/514146/overall

There are 6 good reasons for choosing Jango Radio -

  • Jango allow you to LINK your song to famous artists' songs when played on Jango. For example, I have chosen - Byonce - Kylie Minogue - Tom Jones - Rhianna - Bee Gees and others to link to. My song is played everytime one of the chosen famous's songs are played.
  • Jango will create a Radio Station page for you which will give a link to purchase your music on iTunes and other retailers.
  • Jango will display information about your other Albums
  • Jango will provide listeners with your Profile
  • Jango will give you a 50 extra plays Bonus if your song is very popular each week. I have had a Bonus for 5 consecutive weeks.
  • Jango gives you the facility to email all your fans in one mass mailout.
A second Global Radio Station that I am using is - www.unsignedradio.biz
I have only recently started to use this site March 2013 - uploading CRY OVER YOU as a free Promotional song. This Radio Station has an excellent Newsletter. I was featured in the March 2013 edition.
I am also using the music promotional site - www.iPluggers - as a second string promotional support tool.

  • REVERBNATION, GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK will provide you with a mass of statistical information  about your listeners, demographics, country of listener, age groups. It is wonderful how much information you can get from these sites. I have also used Twitter to promote links to my websites.
TWITTER - To support my other promotional activities, I have already TWEET a number of Radio Stations and Musical Stars. A Tweet is a short message of about 140 characters sent electronically direct to a person who has a Twitter address. The stars include - Byonce , One Direction - Rhianna - Adele - Kylie
Minogue and many others.

12 - VIROOL MARKETING

I have started to use VIROOL as an extra online Marketing tool. VIROOL  promote to Social Networks sites and many other online advertising sites. Th URL of my music on YouTube was pasted onto the Virool Promotional pages so that potential buyers will be directed to the YouTube page  Virool have very good Analytical feedback on a daily basis and you can track performance every day of the Campaign. I have started the Campaign with a 10 day trial costing $150 USD. If it is successful, I will repeat the Campaign.

13 - ANALYTICS

Any Business needs Market Data feedback. The kind of feedback which I am getting from Analytics is - Country of Origin of Listeners, Male / Female Ratios, Frequency of use, Number of Plays per day, month and cumulative, Number of  Referrals to Download sites, Revenue statistics, Types of Albums and Tracks sold, Cost of your Advertising and the Current Spend and so on. In the past, how much would you have had to pay a Market Research Agency to provide your company with this kind of Information ? Online, the cost could be about £50 every 2 weeks and it could be less.
As at February 2013, I am able to tell from my Analytics the following -

  • 96% of my Listeners are sourcing my Concerto from YouTube as a result of my YouTube Advertising Campaign
  • In contrast - only 2.1% are referring from a Mobile APP. This is not surprising. Although I have created 2 Mobile Apps - one for my Classical Music and one for my Pop Music - I have not as yet done anything to promote them. So, if you do not promote you will get low viewing figures.
  • 51% of my Listeners are Male. 49% are Female.
  • Ages are spread widely - mainly in the 24 - 64 age segments..
  • Country of Origin - at present February 2013 early days, my Listeners on YouTube originate mainly from -

USA
Canada
UK
Japan
Mexico
India
Spain

Facebook Advertising of The Concerto  - early days yet - show some interesting trends.
A Review of LIKES - viewers who have clicked that they like the music - show the following -

  • 87% are male and 13% are Female.
  • 52% are in the age group 24 - 34 years.
  • Countries of Origin in order of preference are -

India
Malaysia
Italy
Spain
Germany
South Korea

Likes and Dislikes

A word of caution when interpreting Likes and Dislikes.  If you get no Dislikes , you could say that everyone likes the music. On the contrary, if you get few Likes , you may interpret that as no one really likes my music. In my view, both hypotheses are wrong.
The only analysis that really matters is the conversion rates into paid downloads. So, do not be disappointed if you get a low number of Likes.

On Jango Radio my Listeners to my Award winning song - CRY OVER YOU - originate from most countries in the World - very widely spread. My song is most popular in the Asian Countries. Perhaps that is a good sign because Asia - Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore in particular and China and Australia are the big growth markets of the future. I want to be present in the Ocean Pacific Region.

FAN CLUB

In the first 2 months of the Campaign some 650 people have signed up as Members of the Fan Club. Most have also praised the music. In return, Eurekys Music has blanket emailed messages to all the registered Fans in order to maintain loyalty and recommendations to their Social Network friends and colleagues.

CAMPAIGN COMPARISON

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra Australia made a professional Video of their recording of
Ravel's Bolero the same time as Eurekys Music made a Video of The Wild Flowers Concerto for YouTube.
After 2 months The Wild Flowers Concerto has had 2,000 more viewers than Bolero - 21,000 v 19,000.

14 - EVOLUTION OF ANALYTICS

Most of the current music websites provide mainly Demographic Analyses - Age Groups, Male /Female. City & Country of Residence feedback.
There is a need to go further in the future in order  to develop a more defined method of Precision Customer Targeting.  Lifestyle Analyses - Psychographics - will enable you to identify potential customers from their Leisure time Likes and Dislikes.
Some years ago. I invented the word Zoistics to describe the Statistical Analyses of Life Style characteristics,
It is from Zoe - the Greek word for Life and istics from Statistics.
Reference - The Psychographics of Campers and Caravanners in Great Britain ( University of Lancaster 1984 ).
So, perhaps the Online Music Websites will give some consideration to this further refinement of their Analytics methodology and the Zoistics to support their interpretation.

15 - PUBLIC RELATIONS

  • You should also try and develop a PR Campaign. Write some articles and send them to magazines - like I am doing with this Blog.
  • Create your own Website and Blog.
  • Provide a Prize in a Music Competition to gain recognition of your Label.
  • Create a brand name adna  Label - like I created - EUERKYS and register it as a Trade Mark - like I did.
  • Register your copyright and get the reference number EMBEDDED into the Cd. This will mean that you will get royalties everytime your music is played.
  • Finally - make sure vthat your music is digitally perfect. It will make all the difference.
Is all this cost effective ? It is too early to judge but I am on the way !  It is better to do something positive than to do nothing at all - or just sit and think !

16 - NETWORK MARKETING

I will soon launch my Network Marketing Campaign to support all my other Promotional efforts. This will give Eurekys an Intergrated Marketing Programme over the next 6 months of 2013. It will include -

Seeking to use the Multi - Thousand Contact Lists of major organisations whom I have had experience with in the past years. IT will include invitations to provide details of this article to their Alumni.from -

  • Henley Business School
  • Chartered Institute of Marketing
  • Institute of Directors
  • Management Institute
  • Harvard Business School
  • Open University
  • Lancaster University

I am an Alumni, Fellow or Tutor of all these Institutions.
If this Campaign is successful, I will repeat the Campaign in - USA, Australia, Canada - as a Phase 2 Operation.

17 - PHASE 2 MARKETING ACTIVITIES

My Phase 2 - June - December 2013 will include the following activities -

Contacts for interviews with -

  • Radio Stations - mainly UK to begin.
  • BBC Classical  Music Radio 3
  • Good Morning - Television Programme UK
  • BBC Morning News UK
  • The One Show - Televison
  • Local Radio - Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire UK

18 - COLLABORATIVE MARKETING

I firmly believe from my Business Experience - I was a Finalist  for Business Adviser of  the Year -  that Collaborative Marketing / Joint Marketing can produce good results.
In Phase 2 and maybe Phase 3 -I will identify Joint Marketing Partners.
After research,Contact has been made in April 2013 with Dr Richard Niles in Los Angeles  California  who is one of the most famous music composers and arrangers in the World today. His website shows that he has worked with some 40 of the top recording artists in the World - including Kylie Minogue. I hope that Richard Niles will arrange one of my Pop songs - he is not cheap !  This collaboration might be a significant door opener.

19 - PRODUCT PRICING

Most online sites will charge about 70p - 90p per download for the buyer  for a single track and between £4 and £7 per Album depending on the number of tracks uploaded. The Artist will normally get between 50p and 70p for a single and between £ 3.and £6 for an Album.

20 - PROFIT OBJECTIVES OR PERSONAL SATISFACTION

EUREKYS MUSIC is a Lifestyle Business.  There are No Profit and Loss Prjections,  No Balance Sheet Projections for the next 3 years  but there are Investment Limitations Objectives.

These are - 3,000 GBP in Year 1. if I invested 3,000 GBP in the Bank it would earn about 3% Gross Interest less Tax

21 - OUTCOMES FROM THE CONCERTO

TEN BENEFITS

1  To contribute to the Legacy of The London Olympic Games.
Lord Sebastian Coe, Chairman of LOCOG - The London Olympic Games Committee has called on all Britons to make a positive contribution to the everlasting Legacy of the Games. This is my modest contribution.
In his closiing speach at the London Olympics Lord Coe said -
We did it......London did it......Britain did it.
In a very modest way I can say - and I did it too

2   To provide a musical experience to Listeners which gives enjoyment wherever they live or work.

3   To unite Music Lovers all over the World.

4   To encourage love of the Wild Flowers that adorn our Countrysides and enhance our environment

5   To show Business School students and others that profit motive is not the only Business Objective.

6   To inspire the younger generations that if a 76 year old man can do it - so can they do something original and satisfying.

7   To provide an educational tool and example to Schools, Colleges and Universities of what can be achieved from Online Marketing.

8   To praise the providers of the seeds - Pictorial Meadows and the Designers & ; Developers - for their wonderful work at the Olympic Park Meadows

9   To help budding Artists to understand the full potential of Online Marketing.

10   To encourage start-up Businesses to think positively and widely - no Marketing Myopia as Professor Theodore Levitt, Harvard Business School once said.
.

Prince Charles has replied with my warmest thanks and best wishes. However, at this stage he has not
committed to using the Concerto, But, you never know what the outcome might b
However, this is a good example of Tandem Marketing - using an existing successful Marketing Campaign to twin with and benefit from the joint spin-off.

27 - CONCLUSION

  • Do not waste your time chasing the traditional music publishers and retailers. Forget them.
  • Do not waste your time on the X FACTOR or any other TV Show. There can only be one or two winners and 99,998 losers.

28 - PERFORMANCE 2013

My key Objective for 2013 - Year 1 - was to establish Credibility as a composer. I think that this has been achieved.

More than 50,000 people have heard my music across the world. Registered Fans of over 1,000 have said some nice things about my music. Singles have been played on Global Radio Stations more than 10,000 times. My Blog www.eurekys.blogspot.co.uk has had more than 1,500 visitors.
Revenue has been modest - but I expected this outcome in Year 1.

In future years - Who Knows ? But, I AM trying !
You can try too if you want to.........

It was a real breakthrough to have the famous Richard Niles arrange my song - EVERYTIME - in his Los Angeles studio and I am mots grateful to him for his collaboration
It was a real scoop for me.

29 - WINNERS AND LOSERS

If your main objective is to make money, her are some sobering reflections on who wins and who losers in the rat race to make a profit from music compositions and music performance.

You - the budding  performing artist. musician, band, composer, songwriter.

You - who has invested time and money in Production and Promotion of your work.
The Online Digital Music Industry is flooded with talent and wannabe winners - but in reality the odds are stacked against them - if profit is their only motive - and fame.

As I have indicated - if you are not a well known artist or composer with Big Label backing, you are likely to lose money rather than make money. This is reality in the music business today.

30 - SOME GOOD NEWS

You can create a name for a Sole Trader company for yourself and register it with the Inland Revenue as a self employed person.
If you make loses - providing that you are paying taxes on your private income or retirement pension - you can offset the loses and save taxes. It may be good for your credibility to have a brand name for your creative works.

31 -- THE VERY BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE.

Concentrate on the Market Segment that will bring you success - however big that may be to satisfy your ambitions.
My definition of success is - The fulfilment of your ambitions

As far as I am concerned - Success is Multi-Faceted - your life is not measured by success and failure - I hate that word failure - you can have setbacks and disappointments BUT if you Believe in Yourself and Respect Yourself - you will live a very happy life.

Is that not what we all want ?
